Schuette’s Hybrid Oak
Arbor Walk #168, TreeKeeper ID #1791
Schuette’s Hybrid Oak is a hybrid of two of Missouri’s most charismatic oaks: Swamp White Oak (Quercus bicolor) and Bur Oak (Q. macrocarpa). Given that these oaks both produce large acorns, it is only fitting that this hybrid also produces large, easily processible acorns, as well as providing great shade with its large, wide leaves. This hybrid is adaptable to a wide range of soil conditions, from quite wet to moderately dry, but generally prefers nutrient-rich soil and full sun.
Schuette’s Oak is a member of the subgenus of white oaks. These oaks are distinguishable from other oaks from their smooth lobe tips (no awns), their hairless leaf undersides, and their lighter, flakier bark. The acorns of white oaks are also less tannic, meaning that they require less processing to become safe and palatable. One of the parent species of Schuette’s Oak, the Bur Oak, has acorns that are especially prized in cooking and baking for their large acorns.

Leaf Identification
The leaves of Schuette’s Oak are dark green, with conspicuous yellow veins above, and a pale green underside. The leaves are many-lobed, with particularly deep sinuses halfway up the length of the leaf, which is reminiscent of the Bur Oak.
Twig and Bud Identification
Leaves of Schuette’s Oak are arranged alternately on the twig. The twig is greenish-tan and is mainly smooth, but has scattered light-colored lenticels along its length. The buds are imbricately scaled and ovoid, and the terminal buds are clustered.
Bark Identification
The bark of Schuette’s Oak is gray-brown, with flat, raised ridges that meander above deep, darker furrows.
Fruit Identification
The fruit of Schuette’s Oak is an acorn. The acorn can grow up to 1.5 inches in length, between its two parent species in size, and has a scaly cap that covers at least half of its length.
Flower Identification
Schuette’s Oak is dioecious, meaning that some individuals have male flowers and others have female flowers. The staminate (male) flowers are long, hanging greenish catkins, and the pistillate (female) flowers are in small spikes at leaf axils.
